“[Forbidden City] is dedicated to Tony Wing (1921–1996), with whom I took tap lessons in the 1980s, never realizing that he had been a star nightclub entertainer, only knowing that he was an unforgettable dance teacher whose entire class adored him.”      — Trina Robbins

Trina Robbins’ Forbidden City inspired an array of special events (right) celebrating the golden age of Chinese nightclubs, including a special exhibition at the old mint, presented in collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of America and the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society.  Such events kicked off exhibitions of vintage photos, menus, napkins and costumes featured gala food and cocktails and delightful performances by, among others,  “THE GRANT AVENUE FOLLIES,” a troupe of many of the original nightclub dancers.
